Modern Contemporary Sofas and Couch Makeover
I got my traditional sofas refurbished to give them a more contemporary look. I also got a new modern sofa made. I got to customize all the sofas according to how I wanted them to be. In this post on ‘Modern contemporary sofas and couch makeover’, I'll tell you briefly about the making process and the results. One piece of each sofa set is included in the image. For bigger scale individual images of each, please refer to my Pinterest décor board, and Instagram.
I refurbish sofas every few years. Time for another makeover was due. I needed them for the living spaces - drawing and living room. I had two traditional sofa sets in each space. But I also wanted a customized new sofa developed to up my current contemporary modern décor. But I had a space constraint. They all wouldn't fit. So I offered to send a 3 seater sofa, and a 2 seater sofa to my sister's house, and she agreed. This saved me the space I needed to accommodate the new sofa. And this is how the couch and sofa refurbishment and makeover phase began.

Sofa Materials
I procured services from a sofa developer, who laid down material requirements for me. I then began shopping for materials from the sofa materials market. It took me a few days to shop for everything. And I must admit I got beyond exhausted with those trips that my feet became sore. I bought everything myself because I wanted to control the total bill of getting furniture sets made. Also, because I enjoy everything to do with wood works, ceramic, tiles, and clay works.
Wooden Sofa Legs
The best part of the material shopping was the wooden sofa legs. I wanted to add inches to up the height of the traditional sofa sets. I visited the solid wood market and got wooden sofa legs custom made. They designed spindle shaped 3-inches wooden sofa legs for the traditional sofas, and 8-inches wooden legs for the new modern sofa. I brought the wooden sofa legs home and then polished them with the Dulux wood sealer. (bottom right)
Upholstery Fabric for Sofas
Sofa fabric types I chose are tactile materials that are both tough and durable. For the previous sofas, the textured materials I got are plain jute, and woven jute. I personally like a plain jute for its versatility, but it can sometimes feel rough upon touch depending on the use. I chose a softer woven jute for the 3 and 2 seater sofa that was to be put in the living room in my sister's house. (center swatch in image)
I also chose a softer textured fabric for the new sofa for the living room that is equally tough and durable. As families mostly sit in the living room, so a comfortable texture on the skin feels good at the time you want to relax. The upholstery material for the new 3 seater fabric sofa is a jacquard fabric blend. Modern jacquard fabric is another best fabric for sofa. And for sofa pillows, I got soft cotton blends. Sofa Upholstery Fabric Colors
The sofa fabric colors I got complement my house theme. I chose a neutral color palette as sofa colors. I have white walls, and white curtains throughout my house. The drawing room has wooden flooring, and the living room has Carrara white tile flooring. Carrara white marble has dark grey waning in it. The previous two sofa sets I got refurbished are in white hues, and the new modern sofa is a light grey. The off-white sofa set matches the drawing room, and the soft grey sofa complements my living room. The two single seater armless couches are also in the same light grey fabric.
Sofa pillow fabrics are also in various neutral colors, such as pinks, greens, and nudes. For the new soft grey sofa, I added dark green, and black as pillow accents.
Couch and Sofa Styles
My previous sofas had a lot of cushioning on them that added bulk to their size. I got that extra cushioning off from the arms and the headrest to give them a slim appearance. And instead of the multiple unstitched sofa cushion seats, I went for unstitched single long cushion seats. Sofa designs now have clean lines, and resemble modern contemporary sofa design. I remodeled the two single traditional sofa seaters into a contemporary couch design. The couch makeover involved giving them narrower look but getting their wooden arms removed. (image bottom middle)
Whereas the new modern sofa has the cushion embedded in its upholstery. I also didn’t want to put a sofa set in the living room. I wanted to do a mix & match sofa style. The two single seater armless couches are placed across the new modern grey 3 seater sofa. (image top right)
It took about three weeks for the sofas to get made and delivered. I was especially happy with the new sofa design as it was exactly how I wanted it to be. So have a look at the refurbished contemporary sofas, and the new custom-built modern furniture sofa.
